[...] My Valve Index is sitting untouched behind me. I bought this in 2021, Why can't companies offer a version for those with a prescription? [...]
one of my Valve Index VR Base Stations died tonight and I put in a ticket, but I've had my Index for 6 years so I'm not hopeful for a repair or replacement, I can play with one but another via Vive will be $200 if anyone wanted to help my commissions are open or if you have a spare DM me!
i was having issues with my valve index that i bought in 2017 and when i msged support they told me it was out of warranty but they'd send me a courtesy replacement cable (normally $130) and it fixed everything, so thank you valve
[...] I bought a Valve Index. [...] But then I sold it about 6 months later because, meh, it's just not something that was practical and usable frequently enough. So right now we have basically ideal headsets Meta Quest 3/3S which are excellent, dirt cheap, lightweight, and have a large software catalog but they still struggle to retain users and grow the market. [...]
It is frustrating, because I really enjoyed my Valve Index and want a replacement and Meta has some of the best VR tech in the world, but I've waited 6 years for Valve to release their new headset to buy a replacement, simply because Meta can't be trusted.
[...] I bought into VR in the 2015 era. [...] Even when I play VR now with my Valve Index, I tend to play sitting VR like VTOL VR for ease because I don't enjoy walking around essentially blind anymore. [...] VR games need to give up on joystick movement and start thinking about how to increase player comfort either by going back to roomscale so your virtual and physical movements are joined or the tried-and-true casting movement. [...] I would love to spend my money on one but with them being, I think, a year past their self-imposed deadline with early production headsets not having the retro-futuristic look they sold but now looking like a boring Quest clone... [...]
[...] I did for my Valve Index, which I've used twice and are now sitting in a box. [...]
Being able to play without a bunch of setup in your room and without worrying about getting tangled in cables seems great. I have a Valve Index—which is a pretty remarkable device, that I definitely enjoyed—but the hassle of cable management/etc adds some real hassle. And I say this as somebody who actually set up a pulley system to make it work better in my home office :P
Yeah, I've been Linux-only on the desktop since the early aughts and trying to get the Valve Index working was so frustrating and inconsistent I eventually gave up. It sits collecting dust and I've still never played more than the first fifteen minutes of HL: Alyx (because no game is worth installing Windows for). Very much looking forward to maybe actually being able to use VR on my gaming computer.
[...] The only other headset I was aware of even remotely in AVP's price zip code was the Valve Index, priced at $999 and the AVP was three times that. [...]
I have the Valve Index and had to buy prescription lenses to put inside to allow me to play without my glasses. The first company to have auto adjustment lenses to my eye sight will get my money. [...]
I'm disappointed it seems to have dropped lighthouse tracking with the previous Valve Index. Especially because with the Valve Knuckles controllers are my favorite with how they strap to your hand.
The nice thing about AR/VR is that a better version will always come out in a couple of years so you can always wait. I love VR as a concept and some years late I bought a Valve Index and am considering a Bigscreen 2 but really the best thing to do is always wait.
Counterpoint: things like the Valve Index for VR simply don't behave well in this environment no matter how much I've worked on getting it there. [...] I did linux from scratch on a Pentium 2 when I was 12. [...]
[...] Valve Index. [...] And yes, they're -ing expensive. And they probably require an even more expensive video card (i have a 4060 now and i'm not willing to pay more than that for pretty poligons). [...]
[...] I've been working twenty years in IT. [...] I have a Valve Index gathering dust. [...] I'm not sorry for being cynical when all I've seen the past fifteen years of promises given to me which have been broken every time. [...] I'm more unhappy with an latest iPhone than I have ever been, I can't even listen to music without requiring to own Bluetooth headphones. [...]
Nice, I'm excited for more development and adoption in this area, as I enjoy gaming on VR! I've recently got a Quest 3 (previously had a Valve Index) and I'm frankly blown away by the progress over the last 5 years, and also how well streaming games over wifi works - and generally, cable-less PCVR - I wasn't aware it's gotten so good by now! Though I think there's still a long way to go, ergonomics-wise, until I'm happy to wear goggles all day long to work in them.
That's pretty much exactly the logic that got me to buy a Valve Index + Half Life Alyx and it was totally worth it. [...]
Well, I got Monado and libsurvive running some time ago (Valve Index, X11, Nvidia), even for Beat Saber. [...] Also the FoV was wrong, it felt like a vignette around the screen edges, a good bit narrower than in SteamVR. Oh yeah, and the latest version did not build for me, used a previous one. Performance, especially in Beat Saber, was great and better than SteamVR! [...]
Valve Index. [...] This is the rabbit hole I went down (to be clear: SteamVR, specifically the compositor, is completely broken). [...]
In your case, with an RX 590, do NOT buy an expensive x3D processor expecting any improvement. I upgraded from an RX580 (using an original HTC Vive) to an RX 5700xt (and a valve Index) and that's the position you are in. [...]
[...] Gaze tracking is more trouble than it's worth, the glowing eyes on the outside are like a cheap Halloween decoration, and the whole assembly feels like it will get bricked from a waist-height drop on the carpet. [...] Bigscreen Beyond, Pimax Crystal, even the Valve Index? [...] Apple's price tag doesn't justify the lack of competitive features compared to their alternatives. [...] An overpriced streaming client for desktop VR? I have literally zero applications for it, I wouldn't have a reason to own Apple's headset if it was as cheap as an iPhone. [...] The price will drop. [...] If the iPhone has taught us anything, it's that when prices drop, profit margins rise. [...]
It's quite memorable in VR as well! If you get the chance I highly recommend playing HL Alyx with a valve index setup. It was on par with my first playthrough of the original HL so many years ago.
I've used the Valve Index before, it's a great experience but not something that I found to be groundbreaking or life-changing.
[...] Using the double loop strap I don't even notice I'm wearing it after a few minutes and I treat the battery more as a UPS than something to run off of except for when I go make myself coffee and play a game or watch a video while doing so. Having used other VR headsets (like the Valve Index) the Vision Pro is clearly leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, not just in hardware but software as well. [...]
[...] Initially I got a strong sense of de-realization / depersonalization after getting out of the digital world (i.e. [...] And btw, I run all of this on (arch) linux, on a Valve Index kit, using both SteamVR and OpenXR through Envision (Monado). [...]
Have had several VR headsets, ranging from a Vuzix way back in the day to the Valve Index and Q3. This is the first one where I have actively OPTED to use for something other than gaming. The one thing I’ll knock is that other devices I’ve owned have been more comfortable (notably the Valve Index, which out of the box has had the best comfort of any device I’ve had, although I cannot use it lying down/on the couch because the head strap is so bulky).
My Lifetime total is 499,696. I own the original Valve Index + extra base towers + Extra set of controllers. That alone was worth...that was worth over 100k points.
I bought the Oculus Dk1 Cv1 and Valve Index. [...]
I don't really know much about it tbh, I got a Babble for my Valve Index fairly recently so I'm using VRCFaceTracking with the Babble module and I didn't have any issue with VRCFaceTracking itself So I also have the Babble software running and sending data to VRCFaceTracking
It's 2026, I own a Valve Index VR headset, and I STILL can't play Virtual Boy games in 3D?
I have a Valve Index, which is my daily driver. The Quest served as a backup when traveling or when my Index was down for repairs.
I use a Valve Index still. [...] But I've had random things fail on my previous ones that make me question their durability. [...]
I got my first VR headset, a valve index, at some point in 2023. [...]
soooooo i bought a valve index and full body trackers :D no more falling apart oculus rift and janky kinect tracking soon
I really wish the Valve index I bought would work with Linux already instead of being a $700 paperweight :))))))
[...] Yes to a large extent they got those monopolies by building truly outstanding products in good faith and by being pioneers in quite a few areas. [...] For people with mountains of money, they are among the best, but it’s not exactly a high standard, and they are remarkably inefficient in leveraging that advantage. They’ve long lost the organizational know-how to make good games, and they have delivered remarkably few public facing successes in the last decade: mainly Valve Index and Steam Deck, both still relatively niche and wide apart, both primarily attempts at expanding Steam’s dominance to fairly uncharted markets, with mixed success. [...]
[...] I've dusted out my old Valve Index tuesday so my kids could try The Lab. [...] Also the headset is too heavy for them and not easy to adjust, and I had to hold the cable so they don't trip over it. [...]
AirPods Pro streaming 5.1, you get a better surround sound and audio experience than 99.9% of speaker setups. The audio experience itself, sure - "Want high-end audio without breaking the bank and remodeling your room? Get a pair of decent headphones." has been sound (heh) advice for decades. The surround sound part, though? [...] But in practice I found even the personalized HRTF somewhat underwhelming, and knowing what's possible from the VR world the gap is still significant (IMO the Valve Index off-ear solution is still the pinnacle in immersive positional audio without surround speakers, even without personalization of the HRTF, I haven't really tested the AVP implementation yet, though) - which leads me to second, IMO even larger issue: Extremely limited usage scenarios. [...] Compared to the reality of a standard AVR (or even just Soundbar) plus surround speakers setup - take any multichannel input (LPCM, DD, DTS MA, Atmos you name it) and output surround sound - that's...just not a substitute. And that's not even getting into latency issues with gaming/interactivity (a general BT issue, though, at least it's slowly improving...).
I use my Quest 2 constantly but the moment that rumored Valve Index with inside-out tracking becomes available I'm switching. Not only is the association with Facebook not great, their Windows desktop software is awful and constantly breaking. PCVR took a big back seat to the weak on-board stuff with the Quests.
[...] I hear the Valve Index is also pretty good. But VR is just so dang expensive.
[...] They seem to be trying to out-compete the 2019 Valve Index with several newer products that on paper add incrementally so many additional features that they've left the index in the dust, but they manage to keep flopping on the basics - comfort, FOV, speaker and microphone quality, and last I tried it (a couple years ago to be fair), their frame reprojection was warpy and stuttery compared to Index's very impressive reprojection, when the rendering FPS drops below the headset refresh rate. [...] If they instead made a $50, cheap-ish but comfortable headset, with lenses and a strap and slot for dropping in and securing a phone, so that users don't need to keep holding their phone on their face, we could have had everyday MR back then. Plus, now we have wide FOV cameras on the phones, which should enable usable gesture interaction with your hands in front of you, just not something as intense as the vision pro or controllerless quest 3 where there's 6 cameras looking everywhere to track your hands.
VR headset with Valve Index controllers ($1200 total) It was cool initially and Half Life Alyx was a great game, but overall it wasn’t worth the money with how little I use it and how many issues there are with VR and VR games.
Speaking from my experience (a lot of DCS, 10s of hours in VTOL VR, couple hours in MSFS2020, all in VR), if you have HOTAS controllers, it feels natural to use them, without seeing them. Actually, my biggest grip with VTOL VR is the fact that the developer is hellbent on using vr controllers instead of joystick and throttle, which even with the best tracking (valve index) is miles away from precision of a good hotas
there's little lasting value. [...] I do think we need lighter cooler headsets (at least compared to valve index) for longer play sessions. [...]
Used to use VFIO, had everything working but spent endless hours trying to solve tracking issues with my valve index. [...]
It's heavy and the extra encumbrance is not great for general purpose computing, though I never felt the need for extra screen real estate while I'm coding, watching youtube, sending emails etc. That said I still use my AVP regularly, it's a great home theater system for 4k HDR content that's portable for travel. I've owned other headsets like the valve index but the novelty of 3d gaming wore off pretty quickly.
[...] Plenty of higher technology products fail when simple and cheap solutions compete with them. [...] I used to own a VR headset, a Valve Index. [...] Battery life. [...]
[...] I own a Valve Index and the Vision Pro blew it out of the water for pixel density. [...]
[...] I've had a LOT of fun on the Valve Index. It's just too expensive, I think is the big issue. [...]
