I have a Shokz brand two-piece headset (the OpenFit 2+ i think?) that just wraps around the outside of the ear, with the actual speaker part held just outside the ear canal. [...]
The difference is that the OpenFit are not bone conducting, they have speakers which sit over the entry of your ear. And I think that's the reason why they are not really working for me. Maybe I should give the bone conducting ones a try.

I got a set of the shokz openfit air bone conduction earbuds about the same time as you got these. Haven't used them massively, but i've gone through about 6 case charges with them. You can start to feel them after wearing them for 5-6 hours but otherwise yeah, no bad.
You have to stop the constant podcasts. One help for me was getting the new Shokz Openfit 2+ earbuds. Since they are open ear devices and not noise canceling, I use them more and just have music on in the background of my life.
I swear by my shokz openfit. It goes very slightly past your $150 at retail price but I got mine on sale at best buy at one point. They don't sit fully in the ear which is a big comfort thing for me
This morning my headphones went dead within two hours after unplugging them, so I bought a new pair - Shokz OpenFit 2+. Looking forward to trying them out! Shokz are expensive, but they're the only brand I've found that don't give me a migraine or ear ache, so they're worth the cost!
Yes, I think for your use case they work fine. I also read a review from a father that watches his kids while listening to things on the OpenFit. However, outside with noise, I find them unusable.
