A year ago I swapped out a 5800x for a 5800x3d to get more stable frame rates in Counterstrike 2. Made a sizable difference, especially to 1% lows, so these large caches can clearly be a big boon. Granted it's also obvious the game is poorly optimized, the gains look less significant for most other titles.

I am so glad when I decided to upgrade my AM4 system a few years back to a 5800X (3D model at the time I believe was just released and was questionable at the time if it was worth it outside of gaming) I wanted to build a PC from my hand me downs for my kid so I went ahead and upgraded my storage and RAM to a decent 64GB DDR4 set that ended up with a decent stable overclock. Prices weren't great when I bought it at the time but compared to now, I'm glad I bit the bullet when I did.

How about supporting a socket for more than one generation? My desktop PC from 2018 is still going strong, on account of using the AM4 socket (AMD). That allowed me to upgrade to the 5800X3D a while back, a whole two generations or four years newer than the original CPU.

I purchased the 5800X3D last year and have yet to replace my 2600. I did make minor upgrades to my RAM from 4x DIMMs to 2x and bumped my SATA SSD to M.2 NVME.

I was in the same boat with an overclocked 3570K. I only just replaced it last year and grabbed a 5800X3D. I hope this thing lasts me a decade too.

I have 32GB and an aging 5800X3D and I have not had any issues running games yet. Honestly would love to know what games need more powerful RAM/CPU outside of stuff like Flight Simulator, or running at 160fps without framegen.

That would be an implementation deficiency. If Windows can be FDE and load faster than macOS, then the way macOS has implemented the FDE solution is suboptimal, if startup time is your primary measurement. I personally don't have issues with startup times on my M2 Air or 5800X3D/Win11, both encrypted.

We definitely had a good couple years in stability but I don’t see the forever part. Certainly not for gamers. Feels like game devs have come out of their covid slumber and decided it’s time to jack up requirements I recently did an interim update (5800x3d and 3090) so will try to hang on for a few more years

Damn, an 8 year old socket out selling all of Intel... I am still rocking an AM4 mini-itx board I bought in 2017, I put a 5800x3d in it this year, and 32gb of ram. It's a rock solid platform for gaming, 50% more performance for $300 was hard to beat.

I think you’re giving PCs way too little credit compared to Macs. AM4 motherboards from 2017 can have 5800x3d or 5700x3d CPU installed, the former of which is still 2 in the majority of gaming benchmarks beating anything Intel can offer for a fraction of price and power consumed.

FWIW I put a few hours into building a starting city, and no real issues with performance now in that a game like this clearly doesn't depend on smooth frames quite like a flight simulator does. PC components have gotten so crazy that even my almost decade old gaming PC of Thesius is still considered good. But Star Wars Zero Company wasn't running great, so I upgraded from a Ryzen 5 1600 to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, & now it runs great! I'm so glad I got my 4070 RTX before this pricing insanity.

No iGPU on my CPU (5800x3d). So was straight software decode (well maybe AVX2?) against GPU decode. [...]

Sadly I'm not one of those people because I have a desktop with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which does not have an integrated graphics card. However now that AMD is including integrated GPUs on every AM5 consumer CPU (if I'm not mistaken?), maybe VMs with passthrough will be more common, without requiring people to spend a lot of money buying a secondary GPU.

What was your opinion on the 5800x3D upgrade? I'm thinking of doing the same transition but haven't really had any performance complaints with my 3700X. I feel like the supply of 5800x3D will probably disappear pretty soon and the close out prices with it. [...]
