ROG Ally

Seems like the typical Microsoft experience nowadays. My ROG Ally ran fine on Windows 11 at the beginning, but a year later always randomly crashed, even when idle, on a fresh OS install. After switching to SteamOS it runs stable again.

I've been gaming on Linux for about a decade, it has improved massively since Proton, and I'm at the point where I'm able to play Helldivers 2 with its anti-cheat with my buddies and get great performance (the game's performance/bug issues aside). Hey, some of us use these things exactly like that. I have an Asus ROG Ally, which runs steamOS and never leaves its dock, KB+M and monitor. I would have gotten a mini PC, but strangely enough the Ally was the cheapest steamOS-compatible option I could find.

[...] Fast forward to today, and I'm playing Helldivers 2, with its anti-cheat and everything online with my nephew who's on Windows and getting far, far better performance (granted my PC is also more powerful). I can play the modern DOOM games with better performance than if I was running Windows on the same hardware. My point is, Linux gaming is only getting better, I now also own a ROG Ally which I "flashed" (installed the same way you would any other Linux distro) with Bazzite straight out of the box without even booting Windows and I can play the single-player games I like to while travelling, or can have a quick game of Helldivers with my nephew if I'm not near my PC but have a stable connection. I use it for this; found out about it when I installed Bazzite on my ROG Ally and it came with Waydroid. The other useful feature for me is using the Android apps for media subscriptions that only enable offline downloads in the app and not in the browser so I can use them on the go.

My kid plays fortnite using home streaming to an xbox, and says he doesn't notice the latency. I do the same on an Asus ROG Ally, and it's "good enough". I am not a competitive FPV player, but suffer from OCD and notice latency and it tweaks me hard.

I have a ROG Ally running Bazzite. [...] The performance overlay works, TDP controls work (albeit it takes a little initial setup to install the plugins), fast suspend/resume works. Performance is really good. [...] Granted, I don't play online games that require anti-cheat software so that does skew things a bit.

I use this to stream my ROG Ally to my Vision Pro on long plane rides. The latency is crazy low.

Asus ROG Ally with the Z1. Okay, ROG Ally Z1 was a great decision after my Deck died. 120fps on a portable is insane.

🥺 those kitties are both beautiful But man... I bought an rog ally to replace my LCD Deck and the OLED was so nice that it replaced my Ally.

I’m playing Sleeping Dogs on the ROG Ally and still it’s a wonderful gaming experience 14 years later. It feels very modern even by today’s standards. The environmental combat & free running is a lot of fun

also premium handhelds have similarly been one of the few bright spots. my best purchase in years was the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, my laptop is basically unused since 2023. importantly it cost $518 via best buy open box

So glad I bought a ROG Ally when I did (early June), checking Amazon and Best Buy and they've gone up in price by almost $200. FACK AI companies right in the back hole!

I also haven't pirated games since I was a child, but I run Linux, and I game on Linux, whether desktop or on my ROG Ally (Bazzite). The experience for me, when I buy a game, is that I either don't buy one with DRM, or, I buy one that might work, and then I spend a little while trying to get the right version of Proton that runs correctly, and get banned / blocked temporarily for switching my machine identifiers or something too much. It really is a sick joke that the experience for gaming, music and video is all far, far better for those who don't pay than for those who do.

I have a Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, M2 Mac Mini, M1 Pro laptop, M2 Max laptop (work). All of this runs on either an LG C3 42" OLED or a 34" 1440p ultrawide. People are doing this a lot on handhelds like rog ally and others systems to flip between windoze-only games and those that work under Bazzite or other steam deck-ish distributions fine for improved performance and frame rates over windoze. Usually the DRM-laden vermin require windoze still, most everything else works ok enough with proton in linux now. I also keep windoze in as minimal space as I can using linux full-time to update lenovo firmware on my tb4 dock and system periodically as I've been burned with firmware updates under linux, so 128gb of a disk for windoze is usually a small sacrifice as a fallback.

When in tablet mode on a device like the Legion Go or the ROG Ally - clicking the search bar in the start menu closes it and then opens the dumb “search popup”, which breaks your input focus and you have to tap the search bar again. [...]
