[...] It could be useful for limited, tailored solutions like virtual building walkthroughs, construction, architecture, engineering, air traffic control, and occasional gaming but I don't see everyone wanting non-AR VR. [...] Oculus allows for running a VR game like Fallout 4 VR on a PC with GPU acceleration, but then presenting it on a device like a Oculus Quest Pro over WiFi. [...] Honestly, most of the Oculus software feels like an incomplete, alpha-stage product with a shiny UI over it. Even the Oculus Quest Pro hardware reeked of nasty VOCs straight out of the box. The other things are capable VR headsets are expensive, bulky, battery limited, and insufficiently multipurpose. [...]
y meta quest pro 1 year later..... [...]
Likely that it was over 3x the price of the Quest 2 and while it had better hardware it mostly felt like an incremental update. Part of this is definitely because not enough software took advantage of the new hardware it had (i.e. [...] The Quest 3 was announced 6mo later and released a year after the Quest Pro.
The inability of Meta to write a simple working drivers to connect a USB cable from the Quest to my PC is probably the greatest opportunity for Valve here. For some reason this never works on the Quest Pro I have (which I received for free from Meta). Works every time on the Pico 4 Ultra
[...] We should buy the Meta Quest / Quest Pro headset? [...] Maybe that's the reason why the Meta Quest Pro is in "so much demand" that Meta is no longer selling them anymore. [...]
I tried with a Quest Pro and did not find it enjoyable at all. I have not tried the latest Galaxy headset to compare.
[...] Maybe it's valuable for smaller companies or sovereign divisions to find niche markets, and simply build products and services for modest profits for strong customer bases that will never hit hypergrowth. [...] The Quest Pro is still my favorite headset, ever since I ditched the awful controllers and went back to Index controllers. [...]
[...] A while ago I bought the Quest 3 and set it up with WiFi 6 for streaming games. [...] And it seems everything on my wishlist is here: - foveated rendering based on eye tracking - this is excellent, and was I think only available in the Quest Pro until now - a dedicated wireless streaming dongle, with multiple radios on the headset - awesome, tuning WiFi 6 got me to a good-enough state, but I'm looking forward to a dedicated out-of-the-box solution - pancake lenses - inside-out tracking In general, having had the Valve Index previously, and then using the Quest 3, it's a night-and-day difference to play something like Alyx wireless. [...]
Having experienced the Quest Pro I can say that Apple has absolutely no clue what the focus should be on. Hint: being able to grab a well balanced headset that is so easy to put on as a cap. This makes you not think if you are going to watch or play in VR, you just do it.
Typical Meta product. I used to believe and wasted money on multiple generations of Quest & Ray-bans. I expect this device to be unsupported at launch, just like Quest Pro was
Anyone want to buy a barely used Meta Quest Pro? [...]
I'm into it, i have a quest pro (which i think is still higher res than Q3 but idk if it's powerful enough) and would be very interested in trying it out. Not enough gaussian splatting research imo.
I compare it to VR headsets, and I've used most of them. I currently use a Quest Pro and consider that clearer and easier to read than the Air 2 Pros
[...] Instead, prospective buyers are almost certainly comparing the Vision Pro with devices like the Meta Quest Pro and thinking "well, the Apple thing does some Apple stuff that nothing else can do, but I can't even play any occasional VR games on my Vision Pro and it's literally the most expensive headset money can buy." The truth of the matter is that a Quest 3 can do pass-through vision, VR web content, and web browsing along with a decent selection of non-gaming apps at a tiny fraction of the cost of a Vision Pro and you don't even lose all that much due to it being less premium and advanced. Even if we are comparing against a hypothetical $999 future Vision device where the external battery is gone and it weighs less it still doesn't compare all that well in that context. [...]
[...] The Quest Pro also supports eye tracking, though not sure how well-integrated that is into the experience. [...]
For what its worth, I have a Quest Pro and am quite happy with it. I don't use VR a ton, but compared to the Quest 2 I preferred the Quest Pro hands down. [...]
There are comfort solutions but if there's nothing compelling enough for you to do so, you probably won't seek them out. (fwiw Globular Cluster is the general solution for Quests!) I just got a new different headset (Quest Pro, coming from an Index) and I had to figure out how to make it comfortable enough, because you're right that out of the box, they rarely are. (Except Index, which is still one of the best all-around headsets, even years on) But I figured out a comfort fix because I'm hooked: I'm in VR 10-20 hours a week these days, because I use it to transcend my physical body and hang out with friends around the world. [...]
I got a Quest Pro for free from Meta, and only realized that it was great for watching TV after Vision Pro came out, lol
[...] I own an HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro, Oculus Quest 2, Oculus Quest Pro, Magic Leap 2; the Vision Pro is a completely different animal. [...]
Carmack is 100% correct in his assessment that software is holding VR back way more than hardware. The software is cumbersome, difficult to use, non-intuitive, confusing for newcomers, and glitchy. [...] "Productivity" software is even worse. I regret spending $1500 on my Quest Pro given that I've only used it for like a dozen hours. [...]
[...] the iPhones have 4x the price of mid-tier Android phones the whole time. [...] (Even the fantastically expensive Quest Pro is just like... an insult, even though it does have eye tracking which is now absolute minimum table stakes (and Quest 3 doesn't have it)) The current price it too high to go mainstream, yes, for sure. [...]
The Quest Pro could have used some of "this vision". [...] Resolution wasn't there for monitor replacement. Floundered in the market, so price drop to $999. [...] Big screen beyond and Apple Vision Pro had a much better vision and product execution, eating Quest Pro's lunch.
I bought a Quest 3 to compare against Vision Pro and the resolution, warping, and nauseatingly laggy and slow tracking. [...] I will wait for Meta to try again with Quest Pro 2 or Quest 4.
[...] Even the Quest Pro, which was meant to be for business use, was a locked-down, hard-to-hack (aka hard for developers to fully utilize) Android toy. And when I say "toy" I mean, it's the software equivalent of a hard plastic device with tamper-resistant screws and "no user serviceable parts" intent. [...]
[...] For reference, I myself and a number of people I know quite happily use Quest 3 as a monitor replacement. It's borderline - Quest Pro was not good enough - but Quest 3 is - for me.
[...] I also own a Meta Quest Pro and abandoned it to leave it collecting dust soon after getting it. [...] Apple having full vertical integration and great software really helped here. I put it on upon receiving it and then didn’t take it off until the evening, charging it whilst using it along the way. [...] It gets a lot of subtle things right, it feels intuitive to use, the image quality is incredibly good and I can do everything using the pass through cameras, including reading very small text. [...] Using it in parallel with a Mac is great, because it absorbs the screen and also the keyboard and mouse, making it very easy to navigate and use on the couch or at a desk. [...] The weakest points so far are… - my contacts mess with the eye tracking (my lens inserts are being delivered late) - there are some accidental ‘clicks’ with the pinch to click - this is only partially a Vision Pro thing, but Apple’s Screen Mirroring still causes a very slight amount of blur, I presume due to their video codec
And I speak as someone whose regular VR rig has been a second hand meta quest pro. [...] And I got it because it's eye tracking allowed foveated streaming on steam link. [...]
[...] I bought a Meta Quest Pro from FB Marketplace and honestly it's pretty nice to have face tracking. [...]
Alright I've had just about enough of the Meta Quest Pro controllers jesus christ, these things are obnoxious. [...]
I got a 2nd wifi router for my VR room so I can debug projects on my Meta Quest Pro using air link. Feels good to loose the cable :)
[...] Was the whole user experience up to scratch before it was released? [...] As someone who worked on the Quest pro/3 ecosystem, We were shitting our selves, because we knew that apple would only release something when the user experience was right. Oculus just shat out features as and when performance cycles needed juicing. [...] The headset was bulky and surprisingly off balance. It wasn't an all day wearable (i mean the quest pro was actually comfortable by comparison) The resolution wasn't that great and the only thing you could do with it was either look like a twat recording video or have spreadsheets pasted everywhere. [...]
[...] Once I watched an Apple Immersive movie, and then even a completely regular old 2D movie in theater mode at night in Joshua Tree, I got it. [...] It proves out the vision and then you can start working down the price. The only thing Meta VR got right is gaming: it's the only use case that works with the resolution & hardware at the price point that they're trying to occupy. AVP could obviously work too but look: I've nearly punched out a window with my quest pro. [...]
[...] I'm one of those rare customers that genuinely wanted to keep it, because it's the only VR headset I could actually get work done in thanks to its stellar resolution and overall screen quality. [...] Maybe, just maybe, there will be a real Quest Pro with the same screen quality as the AVP. The Quest 3 is almost perfect in every regard except for that, so I'd happily drop "stupid" money to grab one with an AVP level display in it. [...]
[...] The screen size was too small, the resolution too poor, and it was a little too jittery and unnatural feeling. [...] Even on my Quest Pro I find it just on the edge of being too annoying to do coding-work. [...] And second question, worth buying the One or waiting for the One Pros?
[...] On earlier or lower resolution headsets with Fresnel lenses, it does force you to look at a screen slightly differently - everything has to be a bit larger, you have to move your head/eyes a bit more to deal with blurry edges. Pancake lens devices like quest pro is fine though. I tend to favour one large virtual screen in vr though, whereas in real life, I prefer one large and one portrait second monitor. [...] Name a shitty money making buzzword, and they've pivoted towards it and failed at it.
[...] For me, the killer function has been doing display mirroring with my Mac and leveraging the environments like Mt Hood or the Moon as a way to get into a focused flow. I love the idea of windowing in a virtual space, but the there is the same feeling of limitation that I get with this device as I get with my iPad. I've used it to capture some VR photos and videos of family, survey the house to identify the source of a water leak, used it for a couple workouts, to play some Xbox games in bed without waking my wife. [...] I'll probably buy a MetaQuest Pro after this just to see what that is like I'm ultimately waiting for the ultrawide enhancement they teased earlier this year and hoping they add a few more environments.
[...] it's a bigger market and the value proposition is more obvious. [...] Tue quest pro is expensive, but its form factor and tracking integration is novel and convenient. [...]
[...] That’s why, and how, I use mine. Otherwise, it would just kinda be in the corner as a “really high resolution, really good eye and hand tracked, but otherwise very uncomfortable and heavy headset with too many compromises” sorta deal. My Quest 2 for example, I bought that simply to tear it apart and have fun with it. [...] My Pico 4 Enterprise, I bought with the express intent of getting eye and face tracking working without needing to get a Quest Pro (with worse compromises in my mind, for my use-case at least). [...]
[...] The problem is the shitty software. SteamVR and Oculus apps are worthless and flaky, but when they work, there's zero need for any damn cables. PS: I have a barely used Meta Quest Pro for sale. [...]
[...] I used to own a quest pro, but I sold it a year ago since it was catching dust. [...] It still looked like I was watching life through a camera. [...] I noticed bugs and even the apple employee was stunned how I got a window 'stuck' in a place. [...] Overall it wouldn't replace an OLED tv, but it was impressive. [...] I guess the Vision Pro is fun, but it was a bit uncomfortable and not really AR imo
[...] "Newly-shipped OSes just have a certain special something about them" - aka bugs. I get the reminiscing angle (though I think it's not the best thing to dwell on) but people should be asking whether they will use this device, and at its current weight and cost and (literal) hand-waving utility, it really doesn't seem very compelling to anyone but a VR/AR/3D enthusiast or a developer, unless maybe the virtual monitor experience becomes very good, but then comments on long term comfort are mixed. I have a Quest Pro which I pull out from time to time, I don't regret the exploration opportunity, but this kind of device is currently just confining and awkward. The Vision Pro is even heavier, with their questionable use of aluminum it really seems they target collectors rather than comfort, which is odd in an age of e-waste consciousness. [...] I have no doubt Apple (among others) anticipates a world where super high resolution sensor laden headsets are lightweight and much less expensive. [...]
I have an Xreal Air and don't find it comfortable at all unless I'm laying down. [...] Quest 3 is vastly more comfortable for me, especially with the Elite strap. Quest Pro, on the other hand, wasn't as comfortable due to the pressure to the forehead... [...]
[...] I have a Quest Pro and I really like Immersed a lot. I wish my headset were more comfortable so I could work in that environment more. It's really enjoyable from a software perspective. The hardware on the Quest Pro just isn't there yet.
[...] In order to get and maintain the best possible clarity, key for text, I have to wear it higher on my face than is comfortable and tighten the strap more than I would prefer. [...] I find the Meta Quest Pro and 3 more comfortable, but the CV1 was the most comfortable. [...] Vastly more comfortable (if your face isn’t too wide) but tiny FOV and lots of fiddling required to get sharp text, with unavoidable blur at the edges of the screen. [...]
Although my Elac speakers and SVS sub have an opinion of their own, but I agree generally regarding Oculus. [...] My Thinkpad T series has terrible speakers, so headphones are an improvement for almost any activity there. Quest Pro sound is pretty good, but it's nothing spectacular and good luck casting or viewing multichannel media there, i.e., there's no Plex or VLC for Oculus (this app doesn't work on Quest[0]). [...]
[...] Anyone want a slightly used Quest Pro for cheap? [...]
[...] Quest Pro had it but was discontinued for being too expensive. We'll have to wait on pricing for Steam Frame, but I don't expect them to match Meta's subsidies, so I'm betting on this being more expensive than Quest. [...]
Also feel free to ask questions and I'll see if I can answer them while I use the headset. I've used the following headsets as comparison: Meta-Quest Pro/2/3/Rift/DK2 Vive/VivePro2/ViveProEye Varjo Index
That's really good to know as I have both a Quest 3 and a Quest Pro myself. [...] I did work with Quest Pro for a while and it was just usable but only as an exception. If the current display glasses are worse than Quest Pro then for sure I'm not going to be happy.
Hey y'all! Selling my Quest Pro has haven't been using it as much as I would like. My loss is your profit, headset w/all accessories in a nifty case www.ebay.com/itm/33574833...
