[...] In 2021 I bought an Oculus Quest 2, which at the time required a Facebook account so I made a throwaway one, but other than that I haven't been on Facebook (and I haven't even touched my Quest 2 in three years). [...]
[...] That was the promise when I originally bought the Quest 2, but a year later they forcibly tied those accounts to Meta accounts and through that, facebook accounts. Now I can't use my Quest 2 because it is locked into an account verification screen, demanding that I upload a photograph of my drivers license to access the games I already purchased from the quest store. [...]
[...] Even on my old Quest 2 it runs impressively well. [...]
I have a Quest 2. After 6 months the non-replaceable battery lost 70% of its capacity and the controllers developed unfixable drift. Never making the Meta mistake again.
[...] I have purchased the Go, Quest, and the Quest 2, but not the Quest 3. [...] I co-founded the SAIC VR Lab and a year later worked on a VR project for Disney - this was in the late 1990s. [...]
Last year, I got a windfall and bought a second-hand Meta Quest 2 for £200, mainly for gay porn! [...]
Till it has practical everyday uses and is at least semi affordable, I would categorize it as experimental still I have a Meta Quest 2 from half a decade ago. [...] And I think the entry price point is like half that of a PS5? [...] The grandiose visions are put on ice, while they shift towards a fashion-accessory with a camera and audio. [...] The days of fighting with audio drivers for 3 days after the install are largely in the past Everyone trying to shove AI down your throat There is some backlash against this. SaaS used it to justify price increases, but ironically AI may make it more difficult for them to sustain their very high per seat pricing model No real disruption or competition in the browser space. [...] Even building your own PC seems like it will become a thing of the past given how price are rising. [...]
I've had a quest 2 since a bit before the meta rebrand. [...] I stopped using it when it became increasingly clear the quest 2 just isn't powerful enough for it
[...] If this is the only use case, it's not worth the money. I have a Meta quest 2 and I've been using it to work out and play games for a couple of years now. [...]
I bought a meta quest 2 headset a couple of years ago because I was genuinely really excited by the concept of immersive horror games. Unfortunately it feels vaguely unhealthy for my brain and I need to use teleport or I get nauseated very quickly.
I got a Meta Quest 2 during the pandemic. I haven't used it for 4 years 😂
Considering that Meta is probably selling the Quest 2 and 3 at cost (or even subsidizing it) I'm pretty sure it's intentional as a cost-cutting measure that has an easy and somewhat inexpensive aftermarket fix. But yeah, as someone who waited +1 year to get a third-party strap, don't do that. It's worth the 30$.
I worked at Oculus on every headset from Rift DK1 to Quest 2 from 2012-2019 and this statement could not be more wrong. [...] You need more than a glass maker to build novel optical designs, besides which, none of the headsets at least within that time window used any material from Corning. [...] Rift S, Quest, and Quest 2 all used an evolution of that design that took in further advancements done internally within both the product and the research teams. [...]
Exactly where I am. Was all-in on Quest 1 and Quest 2, but had to offboard due to Meta's wild policies (that ended up locking me out of my account with little recourse -- some bug with the Oculus standalone account merge with FB and then re-split). As much as I'm a proponent of VR, I won't play by Meta's rules.
[...] Bought a quest 2 thinking surely they have learned their lesson by now. [...]
[...] Having had a Quest 2 and dealt...nay, put up with with Meta and their god awful ecosystem you couldn't pay me to touch another one of their headsets. [...] That alone makes the price difference worth it to me. [...]
I have every version of the Quest that has been sold, and it became VERY clear, around the time the Quest Pro came out (and John Carmack left not so peacefully [1]), that nobody at meta actually uses any of these daily. And, all their QA testing obviously starts with a device reboot, clearing all the since-quest-2 bugs that exist when you put the thing on your face after letting it sit a day. [1] "Make better decisions and fill your products with “Give a Damn”!"
At last! I really enjoyed my time with the Oculus Quest 2, but could not stomach having Meta in my house/on my network. I sold it and resolved to either wait until I could get a good deal on an Index or Valve came around with something new, and now I can look forward to VR again!
Meta locked two games I already paid for - Blade & Sorcery VR and Beat Saber - behind account verification on the Quest 2. [...] No matter how cool glasses like these may look, I have no trust that the brand will not suddenly demand more money or information from me to continue using a product I have already purchased.
[...] It’s children using their parent’s old Meta Quest 2 headsets they bought during the pandemic because they were bored, then forgot about. [...]
This is probably a very odd and roundabout way of doing something akin to what you are asking for, but my recently released VR game DodgeALL[0] has a form of modding support for (wav/mono) audio files which can be uploaded (via SideQuest) to the headset. [...] you could move your head around and hear spatialized audio files as they fly around the arena. You don't even need special headphones, the ones on the Quest do a good enough job, and Meta's Spatial audio SDK does a wonderful job of spatializing audio. [...] Sorry if this sounds like some self-promotion - I specifically built this functionality[2] for my previous audio engineer so that he could quickly design and test sounds without the hassle of having to build/install an APK with every new audio file. [0]: (only for Quest 2/3/3s/Pro headsets) [1]: [2]:
The Meta Quest 2/3 finally fixed that a few months ago [1], where you "tilt" the horizon of the entire OS [2]. So it doesn't matter if an app doesn't support it -- you can lie on your bed and watch a screen directly above you even if it was only designed for horizontal use. [...]
[...] Replacement controllers are available without an issue directly from meta: - - On the software side they have been pretty great with support IMO, e.g. by adding 120Hz to the Quest 2 quite some time after release and opening up the Oculus GO, after they discontinued it. Maybe not valve-level but definitely much more than I expected from meta, and their hardware was a third of the price of valve's, despite having an actual APU in them!
Before the bandwagon jumps on "Metaverse is dead", Meta is pursuing multiple headsets, devices strategy and trying to find the right Features / Price mix. Quest 2 is the most successful headset and it seem to have the perfect balance. Quest 3 although great, probably is slightly expensive for the mass market. [...]
Nothing electronic I own feels like mine anymore My Mac, iPhone, and Apple TV are owned by Apple. [...] My Quest 2 is owned by Meta. My Kindle is owned by Amazon. [...]
I worked for Meta on Quest 2. [...]
I had the original Oculus Rift (tethered to a PC), the Oculus Go, the Quest 2 (paid for by my former employer) and now the Quest 3 (employer discount, I work for Meta but on WhatsApp, not Quest), and it’s a huge improvement over the Quest Pro or Quest 2, which is why I got it. My main use case is watching the 360º spherical panoramas I take with my Ricoh Theta Z1 camera, and possibly some light gaming, although Call of Duty Above and Beyond’s dogged insistence on realistic weapons handling is more of a drag than fun. I’m still working on getting a WebXR-enabled photo gallery generator using Three.js to be able to share those immersive panoramas with friends & family.
I had completely forgotten I own a Meta Quest 2... Silly Beat Saber machine still goes brrrr
@Iamsaltytrash I actually tried this once — I’d been through a really fucked-up day of cat rescue stuff — and I think it genuinely helped keep it from turning into intrusive thoughts. It was in VR on a Meta Quest 2 (that I owned through no fault of my own, long story) and I think that level of […]
I missed VR, I got my meta quest 2 workin with Linux Mint :3
I also have a used oculus/meta quest 2 for offers I got it as a gift since a friend never used it and I can’t use it due to bad motion sickness so it’s been sitting in my closet for a while now I also don’t want to drag out for pics but can if interested looking for $100 + ship
Imma be honest, while I want everything shown here, I think I most want that Steam Frame. I own a Meta Quest 2 and love playing native on the headset, but dislike being in a separate ecosystem from the vr games I own on Steam. Now I can finally play my Steam VR games natively!
see the funny thing is the only reason i kept a meta account was for the meta quest 2 headset i own and honestly i don't...really think it's worth that. fuck this lmao.
I'm thinking about getting a new vr headset, but i'm wondering which one would be good to get. I own a very old Meta Quest 2 and it has started to lag increasingly more and more as days go by. What would you recomend?
ok so the worst thing I can confess about myself is that I own a Meta Quest 2 and it's very enjoyable. its strongest use case is the virtual cinema viewing app, whose imperfections (pic quality not 1000% optimal) are more than outweighed by the uncanny simulation of the big screen experience.
Recently, I got a Meta Quest 2 and did some vrchat worlds. Found two cool ones! vtuber VRCHAT
[...] I have a Quest 2, and I only held off on getting a Quest 3 because I don't want to keep giving money to Meta unless they made something game-changing. Given that rhythm games are the primary purpose of my Quest 2, I think this settles me on the Steam Frame as my next headset. [...]
He pumped something like $100B into the endeavour (Meta Quest / VR / Horizons) and it is just slowly dying as we speak. Literally never met anyone who used or liked the Horizon thing, VRChat in comparison is more popular and doesn't feel like a soulless corporate husk: they also have quite the variety of worlds, from party games, to someone building a whole jet/chopper flight combat simcade world; ofc all of them are a bit jank, but lots of cool stuff and very expressive avatars. Meta Quest, on the other hand, seems like a really good piece of tech - I still have my Quest 2 (because I'm broke as hell), but I enjoyed even that one, albeit maybe with a slightly more comfy head strap than the default one and the Virtual Desktop app cause their Link app doesn't support Intel Arc GPUs. [...] and then never really wrote good software to take advantage of it. [...]
The only game I tried on Steam that didn't work was Slave Zero, a game from the 90s. Unfortunately, I still have to use Windows for VR games. It is too troublesome on Linux (at least for the Meta Quest 2).
Of course the AVP is much nicer than the Quest 2. For more than 10 times the price it had better be. [...] The quest 2 was clearly 'make it as cheap as possible so lots of people can buy it' and the AVP's was 'make it as good as it can be, price is not a factor' Still though, both products eventually get stuck at the same point: a killer usecase. [...] I love VR for it and I use it a ton. [...]
It's more likely than not that they will, in my opinion. As an owner of both an AVP and Quest 2, the former is a lot nicer to use than the latter with the exception of VR games, and my hunch is that Valve is going to eat Meta's lunch for gaming with Deckard (which will be at least as good as the Quest 3, but much more open, paired with a vastly more populated and popular marketplace, probably won't treat PCVR as an afterthought, and won't be saddled with the Quest's somewhat painful sideloading experience). The main hurdle Apple faces is bringing costs down and improving the AVP's form factor, both of which are well within their capabilities.
I’ve not been using Virtual Desktop but regardless, yes, PCVR on Meta headsets is more of a pain than it needs to be. [...] It seems like they break Link functionality every other software update, too. BSB2 is definitely on my radar as a replacement for a Quest 2. No inside-out tracking is a bit of a letdown (I don’t relish the thought of setting up lighthouses) but a dedicated no-nonsense PCVR experience combined with the weight and bulk savings would be worth it.
Well the Meta Quest 2 starts $500 so I'm not sure if you were using a MQ2 or MQ3S (which has essentially the screens of the MQ2 from what I understand). I have tried the MQ2 (I own one) and I have tried the MQ3. [...]
[...] I don't own a Vision, but had a meta quest 2 for a short while and used only for playing games. [...]
It could have worked for a more physical experience, but the Vision Pro does less for me than even an Oculus Quest 2. No controllers, no haptics, I just get that it wasn't aimed at me but I'm scratching my head about what they were going for. Even Meta isn't to keen on the experiences I value in VR (basically fitness), and even though they support it, I get the feeling that they would much rather be doing social experiences...I hope someone enters the VR space in the fitness area with more enthusiasm.
[...] I love just a few things on my Quest 2, and several times a week I take ten minute breaks for ping pong, something meditative, tai chi, etc. [...]
[...] My Meta Quest 2 had a super crappy version I tried for all of 2 minutes. [...] The little indicator that floats over your keyboard is cool, touch bar coming back from the grave. But I felt like I couldn't dial in the environment past the point where I could still see my keyboard/hands because of the "keyboard disappearing" issue.
[...] I have the Meta Quest 2 running on a very powerful workstation[0] and its fun for an hour or two every month or so. [...] Apple is user hostile, imo, to the point that the juice isn't worth the squeeze. [...]
[...] Meta has been spending a lot of money on VR, and I suspect a significant portion of that is getting mainstream content producers to do stuff in vr - NFL/UFC/etc. putting vr cameras at events, game studios spending time and money to port games to vr (i don't think bethesda would have done skyrim vr entirely on their own dime). [...] You can download one of the browsers and do it there, but last I checked firefox reality was dead and I couldn't get wolvic to work on my quest 2. [...] I'm also not gonna buy a VR device specifically for porn, so after having the quest 2 for a few years (and not using it for at least a year), I'm just gonna sit back and wait a couple generations. There are some good games but I feel like this is a field of dreams situation - if you build it they will come. Build a platform that lets people do non-illegal things in VR and they'll come. [...]
I have racked up hours upon hours of actual, productive work in my Quest 2 and 3... I have a Quest 2 right now and attempting to use it for desktop computing just doesn't work all that well for me (their Quest Link app with desktop windows, or SteamVR desktop feature; might also have to use the Meta Workspace app or whatever it was called in the future). [...] I do catch myself squinting a little bit at them sometimes, but 10, 11 and 12 font sizes (in JetBrains IDEs and VS Code) seem too small in VR and going bigger decreases the lines of code per screen to an annoying degree. [...]
