Behavior being different online than in real life is not limited to kids either. Nobody on Facebook is meaner than a 60-something year old lady with a wall full of cat pictures and minion memes. I genuinely doubt that half of them would hold the same discourse face to face.

No argument from me here on the /56 vs a /60, I play the cards I'm dealt. AT&T being the same shitbags they've always been. But its multi-gigabit fiber from them or questionable DOCSIS from Spectrum, and I've never met an honest Spectrum representative. I refuse to do business with them after all the fraud they've given me over the years. In the end its still a bajillion-ish IPv6 addresses I have to play with versus the one-ish I have with IPv4.

Just so I understand you correctly: 1) It's "fucking bad" that we are at a 60-year low for hurricanes this season. 2) It's "fucking bad" that "global warming" will cause more hurricanes in the future. So how does it actually work? Climate "scientists" have been telling us that Earth has severely warmed already, and they've been telling us that the warming will cause more hurricanes. So when is that going to begin exactly?

Well I have a lot to say but I don't see much use. Just to restare 1) LTV is correct because it correlates with the system you disagree with and that it's superior to? 2) The best evidence overturning all of the consensus and evidence against LTV is a 60 citation comment on a paper? My shittiest paper has more citations than that and it's 5 years old. Something confirming LTV would be a nobel memorial for sure.

Anthropic is almost purely a model company. They own close to no data centers. If models are becoming commodities, and the main bottleneck is actually serving them at scale, Anthropic does not appear particularly well positioned. If AWS had a 60-80% margin for decades, I see no reason why inference can't have a 60-80% margin for quite some time. The problem is, if costs continue to drop 90% for the same level of quality every 18 months, demand is unlikely to grow 10x to keep the revenue stable. Who knows. Jevon's paradox. But the cost/quality is dropping too fast that it's hard for me to imagine demand keeps up long term to keep revenues (and profits) GROWING.

It's funny how we're all chasing power, and yet here's a 60-cent chip emulating a Mac that people actually got work done on. Not hating on modern devices, they're awesome and all. But it's still interesting. Also, kinda want to order a RP2350 board now too, but I know I'll probably end up having zero time to do anything with it and it'll just sit in a drawer somewhere...

It totally could be illegal, and I don’t care. Those laws exist to entrench dominant incumbents, and make our economy less dynamic. The history of Silicon Valley and most of its innovation come from this kind of thing, and we eliminated non-competes in California for exactly this reason. Apple having a serious competitor in hardware would be a good thing for consumers all over the world. Apple’s overzealous secrecy culture starts to become insidious once you become such a dominant force in the marketplace. At what point do we allow their innovations to bleed into the rest of humanity and lower their margins so humanity doesn’t pay out a 60% tax to them anymore. I think they’ve made enough profits for investors at this point. Id be happy if my Apple stock went nowhere if it meant 20 other companies could grow and innovate new products off the back of it.

It also really opens your eyes to the reaches of what you learn can achieve when applied intelligently. My favorite class in university, by far, was an astronomy/astrophysics type class. I think I scored around a 60%, which ended up being a 4.0 for the class. It was just brutal, but seeing what was at least possible to achieve from what we were learning was also amazing. Speaking as a teacher it's highly unfortunate that at most schools this doesn't really fly - even with curving, because parents and kids alike expect 100% for basic understanding and application. So it's the analog of understanding akin to an assembly line worker instead of an engineer. This is especially a shame in the era of LLMs when rote regurgitation is becoming increasingly irrelevant, and higher order 'understanding' is becoming much more relevant. Though obviously the rote work is necessary to achieve that deeper understanding, but not a path by itself. I've always been much more an application than theory guy, but we all have to adapt to technology and this is where it's at now.
