Yesterday someone accused me of shilling for reMarkable because I post so much about the Paper Pro. No, I just really love this piece of tech. Counterpoint: I bought an iPad Pro M2 12.9" in 2022 and I will definitely never purchase another Apple product.

I've been using a 12.9" M2 iPad Pro as a daily driver for six months. It is almost perfect - the only big issue I have is a problem in WebKit where a two-finger-tap on a trackpad procs both the system contextual menu and the web app context menu. My iPad Pro M2 takes around 30 seconds to solve it in Safari, while my Mac Studio solves it in about 3 seconds using 449% logical CPUs. It really makes no sense. Interesting how much slower it is than native - could it be protections against things such as crypto mining?

If you dont believe me… nobody is stopping you from testing various things on the same model? And if you dont have it already… then what could I possibly say that would motivate you to buy a used one to do the testing to confirm? Edit: And even on my ipad pro m2 doing literally nothing other than swiping to the app library often causes a visible stutter and lag for hundreds of miliseconds… so if you really think it’s flat out impossible to find consistently slower things on the much more complex macos… idk what to say.

Browser use on the modern web is enough to put you in swap territory early and often on 8GB of RAM. My much more RAM efficient M2 iPad Pro with the non-desktop OS and 8GB of RAM frequently has to page out apps I had open two minutes ago if I’m doing anything with the web and like one or two other applications. This things eventual replacement in like 4 or 5 years is going to need twice or thrice the RAM for me to consider it an upgrade.

I own almost every Apple ecosystem device, but I definitely wouldn’t call their mobile device RAM capacity as sufficient. It physically hurts me when my iPad Pro M2 and iPhone 16 Pro Max (earlier 15,14,13,12,11) start to swap out live apps - sure some apps retain state, but the majority still don’t. Even Safari randomly reloads tabs for me, while I’m just researching purchases across <10 live tabs.

Honestly with a tablet I prefer some bezel so I can hold it without touching the screen. I have both a 9th Gen iPad and an M2 iPad Pro, I use the “inferior” one almost exclusively.

Tangent, but related; I wish Apple would now stop shaving mm off the iPad's thickness and start improving battery life. [...] I think it's the only compute device Apple sell that hasn't increased its Apple-rated battery runtime in the last 14 years. I had zero complaints frankly about the previous generation M2 iPad Pro's thickness, it was already impressively thin! I'd much, much rather see battery runtime go up at this stage. I wanted the new apple pencil pro but it only works on the new ipads :( I have the m2 ipad pro. Literally there's no need but I love to draw on mine and that pencil with the accelerometer and gyroscope sounds amazing in procreate. I think we'll start seeing artwork where you can see the difference in brush work.

I understand that they have delayed the announcement of these iPads until the M4 is ready, otherwise there is nothing interesting to offer to those who have an iPad Pro M2. I don't see the convenience of having a MacBook M3 and an iPad M4. If I can't run Xcode on an iPad M4, the MacBook is the smartest option; it has a bigger screen, more memory, and if you complement it with an iPad Air, you don't miss out on anything.

I am pretty stoked about the upcoming redesigned iPad Mini. The OLED screen and the rumoured chip update: A20 Pro with 12 GB RAM could make it a worthwhile upgrade to my iPad Pro M2.

My iPad Pro M2 and VisionPro M2 are officially garbage since they can’t run the latest Siri on device. Will need to depend on Siri in the cloud - just checks notes how it works now. 😆 wwdc

Haven’t watched the keynote yet, but my iPad Pro M2 is apparently becoming a MacBook. I’m not mad as it has an M2 chip whereas my Mac mini has an M1. The Apple silicon IPad Pros are fully capable of being a laptop to the point I rarely touch my MacBook Air.

Have you considered getting a last-gen iPad Pro (M2) instead, if you can find one? I did that last summer, I tried the OLED one but I didn't like it, and the Air is thicker and has darker and worse screen… so I got the previous Pro, and I really like it.

What problems do you have? On my iPad Pro M2 it works fine. Not perfect but most of its functionality is there.
