Dell XPS 15

My 4-year old Dell XPS 15 is up for replacement, but somehow no manufacturer aside from Apple is making laptop with decent specs nowadays? [...] It's repairable, upgradable, and has a removable battery (unheard of in 2025).

I had this exact same experience with a brand new Dell XPS 15 I purchased around 2018 I believe. It came with a killer branded Wi-Fi card and I noticed shortly after purchasing that it would literally bring down my entire home network at the time. I don’t remember what router I was running or the rest of my home network set up at the time, but it was definitely a really bizarre thing to witness, I ended upreplacing the Wi-Fi card.

I've been happy with a Dell XPS 15, basically maxed-out on specs when it was new 3+ years ago. No problems to speak of.

I haven't upgraded my laptop yet, still using a Dell XPS 15 from 2020, recently been tempted by the performance and battery life of my work's MacBook pro to look for some options... I'm definitely getting an ARM laptop next. Mine is a furnace compared to apple's.

For more details on my device: Its a Dell XPS 15 9350. I got it back in late 2023/early 2024. I use it for both college and personally. Fans have been cleaned and there's no overheating issues, even before cleaning it didn't overheat. [...]

I want 2TB storage, a 4k (or close) HiDPI display, good build quality, and not a bulky gaming laptop. [...] I was expecting that to not be an issue 4 years later ... [...] The only non-Apple thing that I can find that even comes close, is a bulky 16" ThinkPad. And then there is Apple who pack everything I want in a sleek 14" or 15" device, plus a very fast CPU and battery life that is years ahead of anything else ... [...] I'm willing to compromise on battery life, and I don't need the fastest CPU, just a good quality work laptop where I can run cargo build / docker pull without worrying about filling up the disk, and mostly just a browser aside from that. Oh yeah if you guys are curious, my current laptop is a DELL XPS 15 9560...a model from 2017 😭 I got it as a birthday gift from my dad after my old laptop completely committed death all of a sudden so I can't complain to much- it works okay, but that's why I am saving up to buy myself a new laptop.

For 16 core CPU, a dedicated GPU equivalent, 400GB/s LPDDR5 memory, 3024x1964 Mini-LED, and 18 hours of battery? The closest I can configure a Dell XPS 15 is $3099, and that's a 14 core CPU and likely lower memory bandwidth and lower performance SSD. They claim 18 hours of battery but only with the base screen, the upgraded screen is presumably less. And from personal experience using an XPS 15 is a significantly worse experience in stability, heat, fan noise, and real-world battery life. [...]

My work laptop has a very "fun" defect that has been plaguing me for the last couple of months. Apparently my laptop (Dell XPS 15 9520) becomes very sluggish and comes to a crawl whenever it is charging using a charger that's less than 130W.

The last one I bought was a Dell XPS 15". They're built like tanks and are great programming/GIS/Photoshop machines that can do entry level gaming. Plus very little adware compared to less expensive models.

Current deadness: Dell XPS 15, beautiful laptop, on the 'best of' lists when I got it Still researching, but looking at Asus Zenbook or Lenovo Yoga rn, AMD instead of intel on the advice of my tech guru :)

Ubuntu works fine on the Dell XPS 15 9500 laptop I use for work. It came preinstalled with Windows, but I shrank the partition so I can dual boot. (Having all data encrypted-at-rest was a requirement which made things a little trickier.) The only weirdness I've encountered is some crashing in some lid-open-or-closed software, probably because I tried to make sure it wouldn't sleep just because I wanted to carry it to a conference room.

Dell XPS 15, the laptop itself is pretty great. Currently running Arch + Hyprland, and the whole setup runs smoothly just off of the iGPU and is a savior on my battery life. Kind of sucks to have an expensive laptop and not use the GPU at all, I might switch to using the GPU when plugged in and when I unplug it have a script switch back to the iGPU.

Who would win: Dell XPS 15 9520 I was given by my work IT department, with 32GB and a discrete GPU (MSRP about $2600 in 2023 when it was new); or the $300 scratch-and-dent refurbished Chromebook I bought in 2024 and installed Ultramarine Linux on?

I need advice/recommendations: My current main computer is a Dell XPS 15 95XX. I'm looking to possibly get a mini PC for my desk, and I wanted to know if anyone has recs for a similarly-powered one? My laptop has an Intel i7-10750H (integrated graphics) with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.
