IMO the ThinkPad brand died after IBM sold its PC division. Lenovo has kept it alive because it is a cash cow, but the machines have shoddy build quality and are ludicrously overpriced. My previous X1 Extreme Gen 1 (2018) had annoying coil whine and screen backlight bleed. One of the key caps broke off after a couple of years. Eventually I ended up doing a full keyboard and battery replacement. My current X1 Carbon Gen 13 is nice and light, has no coil whine, but it's still made from cheap plastic. [...] At this point the only thing keeping me on ThinkPads is the TrackPoint, but since trackpads are decent on Linux nowadays, I think I'm ready to finally ditch the brand. long-life and durable keyboards It wasn't that long ago they had terrible keyboard lifespans which could be a death knell for the laptop, and overheating CPUs which limited performance way behind spec. [...] Alas, they aren't ahead in many other dimensions; my Fedora X1 Carbon is my strong preference over my M4 macbook pro and a large part of that is the basic usability of the system and window manager (sway), which is something Apple will never match until we meaningfully switch interaction paradigms.

Current-gen X1 Carbons are sold with 400 or 500 nit IPS displays. I have complaints with nearly every other aspect of the ThinkPad---even the universally praised keyboard---but the display has been stellar.

Yeah I was an X1 Carbon True Believer for a while but I cant justify their current prices. It used to be 1200 bucks or so cheaper than the equivalent macbook (probably saying as much will piss off the "Thinkpads were never cheap weridos but thats fine)

My x1 carbon gave me nothing but trouble from the beginning. I couldn't even move it too fast lest I risked it locking up. Additionally, my wrist strain got considerably better after ditching it for a comparably priced M2 that blows it out of the water in every conceivable category.

I'm a big trackpoint fan and proud owner of an X1 Carbon Gen 7 Thinkpad, but I would not recommend this keyboard. The build quality is pretty bad. [...] If Lenovo were to replace the cheap feeling plastic casing for alumninum, it would be a game changer. I'm hoping the new framework keyboard can become my new daily driver, replacing the trackpoint keyboards I currently use.

Eh cheaper than now for sure. I got my old G1 X1 Carbon for somewhere between 900 and 1100 from memory. [...] (I think that was 1600 dollars partner pricing - charity discount - volume discount (hopped on an order for 12 already identical already going through) - tax incentives) The cheapest Gen 13 Carbon currently available is 2600 in the same currency, and that's already discounted by 9%, and has a shittier OS (Ships with Home edition instead of Pro), I doubt that would get below 2200 even with partner/channel pricing. If you add "Winflation" that is, Windows 7/8 running perfectly smoothly on the Gen 1 with 8 Gig of memory, the replacement thinkpad being one that runs Windows 11 comfortably would be the $3150 in the same money, for its 32GB memory. [...] Also popular for OpenBSD and 9front, the latter of which I run on an x230 (it stopped charging the removable battery :-/) You can get about 2 hours off the internal and 68 with a big fat removable battery, maybe more if the OS and drivers can properly throttle hardware power settings. I have an X1 carbon 5th gen and it's quite light but not useful for 9front without some Ethernet driver tweaking (likely some phy bits need twiddling.) Instead I tossed Debian on it and run 9front in a VM if I need a local CPU. So far it just seems to work including Ethernet (via a dongle) and WiFi.

Because our IT dept. is both incompetent and paranoid, which is an annoying combination. I keep my own X1 Carbon with Fedora in my backpack, because it's easier than arguing with them.

I've had the same experience. My IBM ThinkPads had great keyboards. [...] Oh, and I forgot to mention the most annoying issue of all: the TrackPoint still drifts on every modern ThinkPad! [...] I've had it on my 2018 X1 Extreme, and now on this 2025 X1 Carbon. [...]

I had a rotating-display Thinkpad 2-in-1, and I think the design peaked in the model previous to that, the X1 Carbon.

I moved to a Framework laptop a few months ago, but I do miss the design and keyboard of the X1 carbon that had been serving me since 2017...

I have a haptic touchpad on my current X1 Carbon and actually don't mind it. The ancient Haswell-generation clickpads were terrible but the Sensel ones are underappreciated.

Yeah, my sister and I got the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon! We didn't print anything fancy or whatever yet but we definitely printed a bunch of stuff, our printer barely gets any longer breaks and most prints were pretty successful. I might post a couple pics soon.

I've had really good luck with the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon. I've even sent projects to the printer from MakerWorld on my phone

I've since upped to 1.4mm walls which my X1C seems to be handling ok. [...] I'd say I'm not doing too badly considering there's no definitive instructions on how to set it up on my X1C. I've had to piece info together to get it done.

Sounds like you got a lemon. I also have an X1 carbon, and it's been a great upgrade for me. [...] The eraser is important to me -- my hand gets numb using a trackpad.

I have an X1 Carbon 2023. It's pretty solid, the only complaint I have is once the CPU usage is over 10% the fan starts running full blast.

I really like my X1 Carbon gen 7, aside from the bizarre Ethernet "port" (it has built-in Ethernet, but they didn't have room for RJ45, so instead of just telling you to buy a USB one it's on a dongle that blocks one of its two USB-C ports when plugged in, eliminating the advantage of "doesn't use a USB port"). But aside from fantastic Linux support, it's got little to recommend it over a similar-vintage MBA, which has a much better look and feel.

Compiling go code is slower than I’d like, some JavaScript-heavy websites like Jira take a couple extra seconds to load, and the GPU can drive a 4k monitor but it isn’t snappy. I am in the same boat. I would buy a Mac if I could run Linux on it. As it is I will pay more for X1 Carbon with a worse CPU just to run free OS on it.
