ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

I still can't change display brightness on Linux Mint on my 2 year old ASUS Zephyrus G14 with 4090 because ASUS used some microLED panel and Linux has no drivers for it. The combination of AMDGPU and Nvidia drivers also leads to situations where Nvidia GPU is not switched on for ML workloads. The only choice is still to run W10 on it.

I can tell you how I got duped into buying their product - a Zephyrus G14: ASUS at the time had an exclusive deal with AMD to ship their Ryzen 4xxxHS line. Initially it worked fine, but two years later performance was already much worse and dominated by thermal throttling. [...] I still don't know the root cause of the issue, but I investigated declining battery performance and it turned out that the iGPU was going full throttle at all times. Setting the dGPU as the preferred device actually improved battery life somewhat. [...]

I had a 2020 Zephyrus G14 - also bought it largely because of the reviews. First two years it was solid, but then weird stuff started happening like the integrated GPU running full throttle at all times and sleep mode meaning "high temperature and fans spinning to do exactly nothing" (that seems to be a Windows problem because my work machine does the same). Meanwhile the manufacturer, having released a new model, lost interest, so no firmware updates to address those issues. [...] I for one bought it because I tend to damage stuff like screens and ports and it also enables me to have unusual arrangements like a left-handed numpad - not exactly mainstream requirements.

The author did a horrible job doing laptop research if the goal was to replace a MacBook’s build quality and overall vibe. [...] Framework appears to have resolved basically all of the shortcomings of the current revision (which still is no slouch), they’ve added a CNC aluminum build and haptic trackpad, and it’s a first-class Linux experience that’s Ubuntu certified. Other than that, I’d be looking at options like the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i Aura Edition 15, maybe even a Zenbook Duo 2026 if the idea of a second screen on the go is appealing and money is no object. Someone looking for some discrete GPU performance that rivals or beats MacBook Pros equipped with Pro or Max chips can look at the Zephyrus G14/G16. [...]

Happens on my ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, personal laptop frequently enough i do a full power down when not using it. Definitely a hardware/Windows problem.

[...] I've just tried to install the very latest Mint released a few days ago on ASUS ProArt P16 with 5090 and it couldn't even boot the Mint installer, it just froze with the Mint logo on the screen. You typically need to wait up to 1 year to get the latest HW supported on Mint, sometimes it won't even fully support it like my previous Zephyrus G14 with a 4090 that never got e.g. display brightness control implemented.

I recently switched to Debian on my laptop (Zephyrus G14) because it was the only way I could get it to NOT run into the problems you described. Went from 2 hours of battery life to 10, and no more of the constant jet engine level fan activity I experienced with windows.

I have a Zephyrus G14 and have experienced these issues. Audio crackling, lots of stuttering when playing back video on the iGPU. Throttling has been less of an issue for me. If you already know Macbook M1 and want a competitive laptop in same range and better features in terms of Build Quality, OS integration and Reliability go for the Zephyrus G14 range. They are the best, if you have any questions simply ask on r/G14 sub reddit, there are a lot of users with unparalleled info on computers. I'm personally using one they're also highly upgradable, except for framework which provides more upgrades than anyone right now.

I can't get Ubuntu working well on my Zephyrus G14 4090. They seem to have dropped the ball...

You can buy GaN chargers of up to 180W nowadays, they weigh half as much as regular power bricks and are fairly affordable if you need them. You don't even need to cover the peak power usage and can go with a smaller charger covering regular usage and let the battery come to help when momentarily drawing more power (this is what I do with my Zephyrus G14 + 65W Voltme).

As a casual gamer, and needing it for personal and work productivity type of applications. I appreciate your authentic not super scripted take for this review. I love my apple ecosystem but being that I use windows for work all day everyday, Mac sometimes seem kind of foreign.

Just out of geeky curiosity: what kind of equipment do you use for work? My daily driver is an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. I use it for regular office work, the occasional video editing (also some gaming in my free time).

I have a 2024 Zephyrus G14 and it has bursts of stuttering which seem to be directly linked to running off USB-C power. It doesn't do it on the original power brick, but on a 70W USB power brick, it slows down massively every now and then, to the point where the mouse cursor is only updating every few seconds and any playing audio starts underrunning buffers. [...] It's fine running off battery, and it's fine when I plug USB power back in, even straight away. [...] If I just unplug the laptop stick it straight in a backpack, it'll keep doing this (getting hotter and hotter, and burning half of the battery capacity) until it hits the critical high temp shutdown. It's great fun taking it out at the start of a plane flight and finding out it's on low battery and has bbq'd itself. [...] The solution to both of these (for me) is to reassign the power button to be 'hibernate' instead of 'sleep', and to explicitly hibernate it every time I'm packing it up. Depends on what you mean by "overall performance", but my Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 2023 is full AMD, and outperforms my work issued top of the line M1 MacBook Pro from a few months earlier in every task I've done across the two (gaming, compiling, heavy browsing). Battery life is lower under heavy load and high performance on the Zephyrus, but in power saving mode it's roughly comparable, albeit still worse.

Do you watch Netflix on this? I have a RTX 4060 version and for some reasons Netflix playback is sometimes choppy, it suddenly fast-forward and I couldn’t make it play normally without a restart.
